Urgent: Contact MEPs on the EU's Unbalanced Copyright Report

Urgent: Contact MEPs on the EU's Unbalanced Copyright Report: "
You would have thought that what with local initiatives like the Digital Economy Act and global ones like ACTA, the copyright maximalists would be satisfied with the range and number of attacks on the Internet and people's free use of it; but apparently not. For here comes the Gallo Report, an attempt to commit the European Union to criminalisation of copyright infringement and a generally more repressive approach to online activities.

A key vote on the Gallo Report takes place tomorrow, so we need to act today and (early) tomorrow if we want to stand a chance of making it more fair and balanced. The best site for information about this is La Quadrature du Net, which summarises the Gallo Report as follows:

Killer Chihuahua

Summary: A few news items about security

First human ‘infected with computer virus’ (another stupid article from the MSBBC, but other news sites fell for it too)

Captain Cyborg Has A Virus-Infected Sidekick… But Nothing Can Stop A PR Campaign (rebutting the above)

The story is — as with all captain cyborg stories — a lot less than the headline suggests. Gasson wasn’t “infected with a computer virus.” He took a chip that had a computer virus and stuck it in his arm, just like Warwick has done n the past. The parallels to an actual virus are minimal, and the usefulness for anything is even less than that. Gasson presents this as useful for considering the implications for implanted technology such as pacemakers, but that’s nothing new. People have talked about potential technology issues from the wireless interface to pacemakers for years. Doing some sort of publicity stunt with an implanted computer chip doesn’t further that discussion along.

Alleged $100M scareware sellers facing charges (Windows only)

Three men are facing federal fraud charges for allegedly raking in more than US$100 million while running an illegal “scareware” business that tricked victims into installing bogus software.

Sality, the virus that turned into the ultimate malware

From an analysis performed with a “rogue P2P client” coded to become part of the malicious network, Symantec has determined that the Sality botnet covers something like 100.000 computers. It’s a bots figure below the one achieved by giants like Conficker but similar in size to other botnets as Storm, Pandex and Rustock. What remains clear is the demonstration of Sality’s unique threat, a malware floating around since seven years that shows no intention to quickly disappear from the net.

Use BarTab to fix Firefox slow startup and memory hog issue

Use BarTab to fix Firefox slow startup and memory hog issue: "

Do you have 20+ tabs open all the time while working on Firefox? Then no doubt you would have faced the trouble of Firefox consuming a lot of memory and ofcourse the large time it takes to restore all the tabs at start up. Now, you can get rid of these issues by using the Firefox addon BarTab.

This addon lets you selectively keep tabs on your BarTab, which means you can unload them. In this way, you can decrease the memory consumption of Firefox by unloading tabs that you don't require at the moment. The tabs won't disappear on unloading, they will just appear in gray or faded. Right-click on the concerned tab and select "unload" to unload it.

In a similar way, it won't load all the tabs at startup, they will be loaded only when you visit them. This significantly affects the loading time of Firefox at startup. So, if you face one of such problems, its time to use BarTab.

Note the faded tabs.

hardinfo – system hardware stats & benchmarking tool

hardinfo – system hardware stats & benchmarking tool: "

A few days ago I was asked by a reader to recommend a ‘system info’ tool. I, foolishly, assumed everyone already knew about 'Hardinfo' – an awesome system hardware profiler and benchmarking application - but it seems not, so here is a quick rundown on one of the best system tools for Ubuntu.

Hardinfo main window
”HardInfo can gather information about your system's hardware and operating system, perform benchmarks, and generate printable reports either in HTML or in plain text formats. “
Benchmarking options in Hardinfo

The benchmark tools are what make Hardinfo different from other general system stat apps and compare your CPU performance to other well-known processors/speeds – a mildly interesting way to waste a few minutes.

Other than that there isn’t a lot to say because it simply does what it says on the tin. It provides a wide range of categories and information and if you’re looking for a system profiler you can stop: this is it.onelick

Firefox 64-bit builds coming for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X

Firefox 64-bit builds coming for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X: "

Users of 64-bit operating systems who wanted to run a native 64-bit version of Firefox were restricted to those provided by their Linux distribution, or, the Mozilla x86-64 web site, for Windows.

However, it seems Mozilla is getting ready to finally provide 64-bit versions as part of its core set of Firefox releases. Mozilla’s John O’Duinn posted that current Firefox 4 nightlies, are now being built for Windows 64-bits, in addition to Linux and Mac OS X 64-bits versions introduced a few weeks ago.

Keep in mind that very few plugins are available in 64-bit editions (Java, and Flash in non-final status), so you will be running mostly 32-bit plugins.

I haven’t had the chance to try the builds yet, but a known bug so far is a missing Visual C++ redistributable library on Windows, which you can get from Microsoft.

And this is just one of many bugs you can expect at this stage. “This is still just a very very very early experimental build”, warns John. If you understand that things may not work as expected, and you may even lose some or all of your data, check Mozilla public FTP server to get Firefox 4 64-bit nightlies (along with regular 32bit editions)

Google Buzz gets a retweet button, so get ready for "resharing"

Google Buzz gets a retweet button, so get ready for "resharing": "

If you've ever used Facebook or Twitter, you're already familiar with Google Buzz's latest feature: reshare. Resharing is the equivalent of sharing in Facebook or retweeting in Twitter. It quickly shares someone else's post in your stream, with your commentary added and a link back to the original source.

It's not so much that reshare is a cool new feature, just Google playing the inevitable catchup with social networks that are a lot older than Buzz. It's unsurprising that Google says reshare was one of the top user requests for Buzz, considering how ubiquitous it is on other major services. One neat quirk of reshare that I think other sites can learn from (I'm looking at you, Tumblr!) is that liking a reshare doesn't automatically show up as a like of the original post.
